Rice is an edible product made from rice grains after being husked and refined. Rice is rich in carbohydrates, a small amount of protein, and a trace amount of fat. Rice is widely used in many fields, including food processing, brewing industry, and agricultural by-product utilization. In the field of food processing, rice is not only regarded as an important staple food, but also used to brew fermented foods such as rice wine and rice vinegar. Rice is also used in the brewing industry because of its high starch content and low protein and fat content.
The global rice market demand has maintained steady growth overall. Global population growth, food industry expansion and consumer demand for high-quality rice have greatly driven the growth of the global rice market. According to CRI analysis, the Asia-Pacific region is the world's largest rice consumption market. China, India, Indonesia and Bangladesh are the world's major rice consumers. As the population in the Asia-Pacific region continues to grow, the market demand in the region is expected to continue to grow.
India is the world's second rice producer. According to a report released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in February 2025, India's rice production is expected to reach 145 million tons in 2024-2025, an increase of about 7.2 million tons from the previous year. India's climate and geographical conditions are very suitable for rice cultivation.
India is not only one of the world's major rice producers, but also one of the most important exporters. In 2022, India's total rice exports were about 22 million tons, accounting for more than 40% of global rice exports. In 2023, despite the impact of export restrictions, India still exported 17.73 million tons of rice.
According to CRI analysis, Indian rice is very competitive in the global market, and its export destinations cover Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe. The main types of Indian rice exports include Basmati rice, non-Basmati white rice and parboiled rice. Among them, Basmati rice and parboiled rice are favored by the international market due to their excellent quality.
In 2024, India lifted the ban on rice exports except parboiled rice and basmati rice. According to CRI analysis, India's rice exports in 2024 exceeded US$13.1 billion. According to CRI analysis, the export market of Indian rice is mainly the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region. Iran is the largest export destination of Indian rice. From 2021 to 2024, the main export destinations of Indian rice are Iran, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates. According to CRI analysis, the main companies importing rice from India are foreign trade companies. The main exporters of Indian rice include AMIRCHAND JAGDISH KUMAR (EXPORTS), GRM OVERSEAS LTD, SUPPLE TEK INDUSTRIES PRIVATE LIMITED and other companies.
With the expansion of rice planting area and policy support, India's rice production is expected to continue to grow. CRI expects that India's rice exports are also expected to continue to grow in the next few years. CRI recommends that global grain trading companies should conduct timely research on the Indian rice market to seize market opportunities.
