Gallium is a silvery-white soft metal with a melting point of about 29.8°C and is stable at room temperature. Since gallium exists in bauxite, zinc ore, and coal mines in nature in an associated state and its content is extremely low, it cannot be mined independently and mainly relies on the recovery of by-products in the aluminum and zinc smelting processes.
The gallium metal industry can be divided into three main parts: upstream, midstream and downstream. According to CRI analysis, the upstream of the gallium metal industry mainly involves the development and smelting of resources such as bauxite and zinc ore, and the extraction of crude gallium through alumina production or zinc smelting. The midstream is the deep processing of gallium metal, including the refining of crude gallium into high-purity gallium, and the further preparation of semiconductor materials such as gallium nitride (GaN), gallium arsenide (GaAs), and gallium oxide (Ga2O3). The downstream application areas are wide, covering semiconductor chips (such as 5G communication RF chips, microwave devices), LED lighting, photovoltaic power generation, military radar equipment and consumer electronics.
So far, the global gallium metal market demand has continued to grow, mainly benefiting from the wide application of gallium metal in high-tech fields such as semiconductors and solar cells. For example, it is used in compound semiconductors, integrated circuits, radars, TV and mobile phone screens, solar panels and other fields. Gallium is becoming an indispensable material in many key industries due to its unique physical and chemical properties. In addition, in the military, gallium arsenide and gallium nitride are indispensable core materials for advanced radars. CRI predicts that with the rapid development of these industries, the global demand for high-purity gallium will continue to rise in the next few years.
Vietnam is one of the world's major bauxite resource countries. According to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Vietnam's bauxite reserves are 5.8 billion tons, ranking second in the world, second only to Guinea (7.4 billion tons of bauxite reserves), accounting for about 19% of the world's total bauxite reserves.
Vietnam's bauxite resources are highly concentrated in the Central Plateau (Tay Nguyen), where reserves account for about 96% of the country's total. They are mainly distributed in the weathered laterite layer on the basalt platform, with thick ore bodies, good ductility, and easy open-pit mining.
According to CRI analysis, although Vietnam currently has rich bauxite reserves and gallium resource potential, due to its backward domestic mining and smelting technologies, Vietnam's gallium metal production capacity is very low. In recent years, the Vietnamese government has been actively promoting the development of Vietnam's mineral resources and proposed to vigorously enhance Vietnam's rare earth and related mineral mining and processing capabilities. This provides a large development space for the refining and processing of gallium metal in Vietnam.
CRI predicts that with the deepening of Vietnam's international cooperation and the gradual introduction of mature gallium extraction and refining processes, Vietnam will be able to establish considerable annual commercial production capacity. CRI recommends that global mining companies should conduct timely research on the Vietnamese market and prepare for the layout of the Vietnamese gallium metal market.
