Graphite is a mineral composed of carbon elements arranged in a hexagonal network with a distinct layered structure. Graphite has excellent electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, high temperature resistance and lubricity, as well as strong corrosion resistance and chemical stability. Graphite can be divided into two categories: natural graphite and artificial graphite. Natural graphite is formed in nature through geological metamorphism, often in the form of flakes, blocks or cryptocrystalline, with good natural crystallinity and low production cost. Artificial graphite is made from carbonaceous materials such as petroleum coke and coal coke, which are calcined at high temperature and graphitized.
According to CRI analysis, graphite has a wide range of applications in traditional fields due to its special physical and chemical properties. For example, in the mechanical industry, chemical industry, metallurgical industry and light industry, it can be used as lubricants, friction materials, thermal conductive materials, refractory molds, corrosion-resistant utensils, inks, pencils, etc. In addition, with the development of science and technology, graphite has also shown broad application prospects in many emerging fields such as optics, energy, aerospace, environment, and new materials. In particular, the discovery and application of graphene has further promoted the strategic position of graphite.
The graphite industry chain can be roughly divided into three main parts: upstream resource mining and primary processing, midstream material deep processing, and downstream applications. According to CRI analysis, the upstream of the graphite industry mainly includes the mining and preliminary beneficiation of natural graphite mines. After natural graphite mining, it is crushed, screened, flotated and other processes to extract graphite concentrates of different specifications and purities.
The midstream involves the deep processing of graphite materials, including the production of high-purity graphite, spherical graphite, expanded graphite, flexible graphite and other products. The downstream application fields are extremely wide, covering two major categories: traditional industries and emerging industries. Traditional application fields include refractory materials, metallurgical casting, mechanical lubricants, electrode products, etc. Emerging application fields are mainly concentrated in high-end manufacturing industries such as new energy vehicle power batteries, energy storage equipment, electronic products, nuclear reactors, and aerospace equipment.
In recent years, the global graphite market demand has continued to grow rapidly, mainly driven by the global demand for new energy electric vehicle batteries and energy storage systems. The rapid development of electric vehicles and energy storage systems is continuously driving the demand for high-performance artificial graphite and spherical graphite. According to CRI analysis, the Asia-Pacific region dominates global graphite demand, with a market share of more than 50% in 2024, mainly driven by demand from the steel and lithium battery industries. The North American market is also growing rapidly, especially in the United States, where strong demand for electric vehicle batteries and energy storage systems has greatly driven demand for graphite.
CRI predicts that with the rapid development of electric vehicles and energy storage systems around the world, the demand for graphite in lithium carbonate batteries will continue to grow rapidly. Overall, the global demand for graphite, especially high-purity graphite, will continue to rise in the next few years.
Vietnam has large reserves of natural graphite minerals, but its production scale is relatively small. It is gradually improving its production capacity and processing capacity through resource integration and international cooperation. According to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Vietnam's proven recoverable graphite reserves in 2024 are 9.7 million tons. Major graphite producers in Vietnam include Vietnam Graphite Group (VGG) and others.
According to CRI analysis, although Vietnam's graphite production is still relatively low, it has abundant reserves and has great mining value. With the improvement of Vietnam's graphite mining and processing technology, and the layout of the lithium battery industry chain in Vietnam, Vietnam is expected to play a more important role in the future graphite market.
According to CRI analysis, in recent years, the Vietnamese government is actively promoting the development of the domestic graphite industry. The Vietnamese government and enterprises are increasing investment in graphite beneficiation, deep processing and environmentally friendly mine construction, promoting the industry to develop into an integrated "resources + processing + downstream" model. CRI predicts that as Vietnam further improves its local graphite production capacity and purity level and strengthens cooperation with international battery and electronics companies, Vietnam's graphite industry will occupy a more important position in the regional supply chain.
CRI recommends that global mining-related companies should conduct timely research on the Vietnamese market and prepare for the layout of the Vietnamese and international graphite markets. The Shanghai, China and Hanoi, Vietnam offices of help foreign companies enter Vietnam's graphite mining, graphite smelting and related markets.
