Float glass is a flat glass produced by the float process. Due to its excellent optical properties, high flatness, uniform thickness and other characteristics, float glass is widely used in many fields such as construction, automobile industry, home appliances and electronic products, furniture, solar energy, and public transportation.
The float glass industry chain can be divided into three links: upstream raw material supply, midstream glass manufacturing and deep processing, and downstream application areas. According to CRI analysis, the upstream link mainly includes raw material supply, and quartz sand is the most core raw material. This link is mainly dominated by mineral resources and chemical raw material suppliers to ensure the basic resources for glass production.
The midstream is the production and manufacturing link of float glass, covering raw material pretreatment, melting, tin bath, annealing and other links. The downstream application field is wide, and the construction industry is the main application field of float glass. In addition, it is also widely used in the automotive manufacturing industry, photovoltaic industry, and electronic and electrical industry.
The global float glass market has shown a steady development trend in recent years, mainly driven by the development of multiple industries such as construction, automobiles, and photovoltaics. According to CRI analysis, in developing countries and emerging markets, residential construction and infrastructure investment continue to grow, and the demand for glass curtain walls, doors and windows, and energy-saving insulating glass continues to increase, providing a broad space for the float glass market.
The European market has a high demand for green buildings and energy-saving glass, and is an important consumer area for high-end glass. The North American market is relatively stable, mainly benefiting from the support of building renovation and energy-saving policies. Driven by the accelerated infrastructure and urban construction, the Middle East and Africa have also become emerging growth points in the float glass market.
The Vietnamese float glass market has shown strong growth momentum in recent years, mainly benefiting from the rapid development of the construction industry, automobile manufacturing and renewable energy. According to CRI analysis, the rapid development of Vietnam's construction industry has significantly boosted the demand for float glass. In 2024, Vietnam's construction industry performed strongly, with an annual growth rate of about 7.8%, which not only exceeded the original target of 6.4% to 7.3%, but also set a new high since 2020.
In addition, as Vietnam's local automobile manufacturing capacity improves, the demand for automobile glass is also growing. CRI predicts that with the further implementation of green building standards, the increase in automobile localization rate and the continuous implementation of renewable energy projects in the future, the market demand for float glass in Vietnam will continue to maintain steady growth.
The production system of float glass in Vietnam has gradually developed in recent years and has formed a certain local manufacturing capacity. However it is still dominated by low- and medium-end products, and still relies on imports to meet the market demand for high-end float glass. According to CRI analysis, Vietnam's current float glass manufacturing technology is still lagging behind mature markets such as China and Europe, and it mainly relies on low-end and mid-range technologies.
Although the local production capacity of float glass in Vietnam has gradually increased in recent years, there is still a large gap in the market and it needs to rely on imports, especially high-end products. According to CRI data, Vietnam's float glass imports in 2024 have exceeded US$200 million, an increase of about 12% year-on-year. The main sources of imports include the United Kingdom, Malaysia, China, South Korea, Indonesia and Thailand.
CRI predicts that with the support of government policies and the promotion of domestic and foreign investment cooperation, Vietnam's float glass will have good growth space in the future. CRI recommends that global float glass manufacturers and related investment companies conduct timely research on the Vietnamese market and prepare for the layout of the Vietnamese float glass market. CRI's Shanghai, China and Hanoi, Vietnam offices will help foreign companies enter the Vietnamese float glass manufacturing market.
