Steel pipe is a hollow cylindrical structure made from steel through hot or cold working. It can be used to transport fluids, withstand pressure, or serve as a structural component. Based on the production process, steel pipe is primarily divided into two categories: seamless and welded. Steel pipe is an indispensable foundational material in modern industry. Due to its excellent mechanical properties and diverse adaptability, it is widely used in various fields, from energy and construction to high-end manufacturing.
The steel pipe industry boasts a comprehensive industrial chain structure, primarily encompassing upstream raw material supply, midstream steel pipe manufacturing and processing, and downstream application industries. According to CRI analysis, the upstream sector primarily encompasses the supply of steel raw materials, such as iron ore, coke, scrap steel, and billets.
The midstream sector, the core of the steel pipe industry, encompasses the production of seamless and welded steel pipes, as well as various finishing processes such as annealing, flaw detection, threading, and anti-corrosion coating, designed to enhance the added value and adaptability of steel pipe products. The downstream sector encompasses the primary application markets for steel pipe products, encompassing a wide range of industries, including oil and gas transportation, construction engineering, machinery manufacturing, power equipment, automotive, chemical and pharmaceutical, and water conservancy and transportation.
Global steel pipe market demand continues to grow, primarily driven by the energy, infrastructure, and industrial manufacturing sectors. According to CRI analysis, with the recovery of the oil and gas industry, demand for seamless and large-diameter pipe has increased significantly, propelling the steel pipe industry into an era of high-performance products. Demand for high-pressure seamless steel pipe used in drilling, oil, and gas transmission has grown particularly rapidly. Furthermore, construction, infrastructure, and water engineering are also major demand drivers. With the rapid growth of urbanization and upgrades to sewage treatment and water supply systems, there is a steady demand for welded pipe, galvanized pipe, and structural pipe.
In recent years, the demand for steel pipes in Vietnam has grown significantly, driven mainly by infrastructure and supported by manufacturing and energy pipelines. According to CRI analysis, public and civil infrastructure construction is a key driver of steel pipe demand in Vietnam. Projects such as highways, airports, ports, rail transit, and supporting drainage and water supply systems are driving demand for steel pipes. In addition, the rapid development of manufacturing and processing industries, especially the production of electromechanical, automobile, home appliances, coated and galvanized plates and welded pipes linked to exports, has created strong demand for medium-thick and small-diameter welded steel pipes.
According to CRI analysis, while Vietnam has some steel pipe production capacity, it remains highly dependent on imports. The Vietnamese steel pipe industry is driven by large domestic groups and several joint ventures and foreign-invested enterprises. While Vietnam's steel pipe production capacity has been increasing annually, high-end products still rely on imports.
According to CRI data, Vietnam's steel pipe (non-alloy steel) imports exceeded US$112 million in 2024. Major import sources include China, Japan, and South Korea. China is the largest import source, accounting for over 50% of total imports.
CRI predicts that demand for steel pipes will continue to grow rapidly in the future, driven by the government's continued promotion of public projects, manufacturing upgrades, the establishment of foreign-invested industrial chains, and urban expansion. CRI recommends that global steel pipe manufacturers, importers, exporters, and investors promptly research the Vietnamese market and prepare for market entry. CRI's offices in Shanghai, China, and Hanoi, Vietnam, will assist foreign companies in entering the Vietnamese steel pipe market.
