Overview

Video laryngoscopy is a form of indirect laryngoscopy in which the clinician does not directly view the larynx. Instead, visualization of the larynx is performed with a fiberoptic or digital laryngoscope inserted transnasally or transorally.

Video laryngoscopy (VL) utilizes video camera technology to visualize airway structures and facilitate endotracheal intubation (ETI). Given the advances in video technology, more reliable, powerful, and less expensive video laryngoscopes are emerging on the market with increasing availability.

Video laryngoscopes can be particularly advantageous in difficult airway management scenarios. They offer a better view of the glottis, making it easier to navigate anatomical variations, limited mouth opening, or situations with poor visualization due to blood, secretions, or edema. This can help in identifying and addressing airway challenges promptly, reducing the risk of complications and improving patient safety.

Market Dynamics: Drivers and Restraints

Rise in the prevalence of laryngeal cancer

The rise in the prevalence of laryngeal cancer is one of the significant key drivers that helps the market to grow during the forecast period. Some common laryngeal diseases include laryngitis, vocal nodules, vocal polyps, Reinke's edema, and epiglottic cyst, among others. In addition, it has been observed that the prevalence of laryngeal disease is higher in males.

For instance, according to the American Cancer Society, it estimates in 2023, there will be about 12,470 new cases of laryngeal cancer (9,990 in men and 2,480 in women) in the United States. About 60% of laryngeal cancers start in the glottis (the area containing the vocal cords), while about 35% develop in the supraglottic area (above the vocal cords).

Laryngoscopy takes biopsy samples of the vocal cords or nearby parts of the throat to detect cancer further. Thus, the increasing prevalence of laryngeal disease is poised to accelerate the laryngoscope market globally and is expected to increase in the future, thereby driving the growth of the market studied over the forecast period.

Furthermore, the video laryngoscope market is driven by various factors Also, the growing publications and studies indicating the safety and superiority of these devices over direct laryngoscopy procedures, along with the introduction of innovative products by market players, have been instrumental in the higher adoption of these products globally. This adoption is further augmented by the facilitation of an integrated video display, as opposed to cart-based display models, and the introduction of fully disposable devices such as the "I-vieW' by Intersurgical Ltd.

Market Dynamics: Restraint

One of the major factors limiting the growth of the video laryngoscope market is the lower adoption of anaesthesia video laryngoscopes in emerging countries due to their high cost and a lack of favourable reimbursement policies to provide coverage. According to Medtronic data, the cost of reusable devices ranges from USD 1,050 to USD 8,050 Mn depending on their technical speciality, compared to the cost of a single-use traditional laryngoscope, which is USD 18.5 Mn.

As a result, the high cost of these devices, as well as their maintenance, are expected to hamper the video laryngoscope market. At the same time, the availability of cost-effective alternate devices for endotracheal intubation is a major restraining factor for the video laryngoscope market growth opportunities.

Segment Analysis

The global video laryngoscopes is segmented based on device type, usage, channel type, end-user and region.

The flexible video laryngoscope segment from the device type accounted for approximately 41.2% of the market share

The flexible video laryngoscope segment from the device type segment accounted for 41.2% and it is expected to be dominated during the forecast period. It enables the user to visualize biopsy tissue, and abnormalities, or aid in the removal of small growths, such as polyps, from the region, thus propelling growth. The additional advantage is that the camera can be precisely manipulated, enabling the doctor a clear and complete view of the motion of the vocal cords. These factors are expected to drive the segment growth over the forecast period.

For instance, in April 2023, Verathon, a global leader in airway management solutions, announced the launch of the GlideScope Spectrum QC with QuickConnect technology. This new, extensive portfolio of single-use video laryngoscopes features a unique, magnetic connector coupled with image quality enhancements to support fast, effective airway management.

The new Spectrum QC operates seamlessly with Verathon's GlideScope Core™ visualization system, the most comprehensive and flexible airway visualization system for video laryngoscopy, bronchoscopy, and dual-view airway procedures.

Geographical Analysis

North America accounted for approximately 38.4% of the market share in 2022

North America is estimated to hold about 38.4% of the total market share throughout the forecast period owing to the higher adoption rate of advanced devices, collaborations with key players, novel product launches in emerging markets greater affordability among patients, developed healthcare infrastructure, and constant focus of market players on the U.S

For instance, in June 2023, Teleflex Incorporated a leading global provider of medical technologies, announced a partnership with Shenzhen Insighters Medical Technology Co., Ltd. As the exclusive U.S. distributor of the Insighters Video Laryngoscope system, which is designed to inspect the upper glottic airway and facilitate endotracheal intubation.

Moreover, in July 2020, Nihon Kohden, a U.S. market leader in precision medical products and services, announced that it is offering the NK AWS-S200 video laryngoscope as part of its critical care portfolio. Designed for the safe and secure intubation of patients in even the most difficult situations, the NK AWS-S200 may reduce the exposure to aerosolized particles ii, which can help protect clinicians while intubating patients suffering from COVID-19 or other respiratory infections.

COVID-19 Impact Analysis

The COVID-19 pandemic brought the video laryngoscope increasingly into mainstream anaesthetic practice. This is a prime opportunity to consolidate the newfound resources and expertise by using a video laryngoscope as a routine intubation device for all patients. Skills degrade over time; therefore, routine use of video laryngoscopes could enable skill maintenance and reinforcement.

Competitive Landscape

The major global players in the Video Laryngoscopes market include: Medtronic Plc, Ambu A/S, Flexicare Group Limited, KARL STORZ SE & Co., Verathon Inc., Nihon Kohden Corporation, Intersurgical Ltd, Hebei Vimed Medical Device Company, Ltd., Infinium Medical, VDO Medical Inc and among others.

Key Developments

  • In January 2023, Timesco Healthcare Ltd launched its ground-breaking new video laryngoscope to support intubation in patients with difficult airways at Arab Health 2023. Within the ABHI UK Pavilion, the company will demonstrate how its new Optima View laryngoscope system can improve visualization, reduce complications and improve the success rate of tracheal intubation in prehospital settings.
  • In September 2023, Penlon announced the immediate availability of the New Diamond Video Laryngoscope range. The portable Diamond Video Laryngoscope provides a high-definition image from a camera on the distal end of the blade, giving an increased field of view compared with direct laryngoscopy.
  • In April 2021, Intersurgical Ltd., stated the launch of the Universal Video Laryngoscopy web page with a view to increasing the product awareness of i-view globally.
