Overview

Interdental brushes also known as interproximal brushes are oral hygiene instruments that are used to clean the interdental spaces like space between teeth, brackets, bridges or implants. Their shape is usually cylindrical and much smaller than a normal toothbrush. These brushes typically have a filament that is held in place by a metal wire, a bit like a mini bottle brush. The wire can be angled or bent to make it easier to reach certain spots in the mouth. A handle attached to the wire moves the brush to clean away plaque and food debris trapped between teeth.

Moreover, interdental toothbrushes come in a various range of sizes to suit different needs. The smallest interdental brushes should fit between tightly packed teeth, whereas larger sizes are suitable for cleaning around braces, denture implants and gaps left by missing teeth. Some of the interdental brushes are disposable and some others consist of a longer handle and replaceable brush heads. The lack of hygiene in the interdental spaces leads to the production of dental and peri-implant biofilm. So, these brushes are also used for peri-implant diseases.

Market Dynamics: Drivers

Increasing focus on oral care

The increasing focus on oral care is expected to drive the market over the forecast period. Interdental brushes play a vital role in optimizing gingival health and preventing various types of oral disease. These brushes were effective in removing plaque as far as 2-2.5 mm below the gingival margin. People are becoming more aware of the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene. This increased awareness is driving demand for interdental brushes that can help maintain oral health. So many key players are focusing on developing oral health products including interdental brushes.

For instance, on May 09, 2023, TePe is a global company in the development of quality oral health products, including interdental brushes, toothpicks, toothbrushes, and specialty toothbrushes, with subsidiaries and distribution around the world. By partnering with Clinical Research Dental (CRD), TePe expands the brand's coverage with the support of a seasoned national team of Clinical Advisors, many of whom have clinical, practice, and hygiene experience.

Additionally, on January 12, 2021, TePe offered a line of sustainable interdental toothbrushes. The company is replacing fossil raw materials with fossil-free pine oils as part of a mass balance system. This reportedly results in reducing the carbon footprint of TePe's interdental brushes by 80%. The TePe range of interdental brushes is developed in collaboration with the dental profession and includes nine color-coded sizes for safe and efficient cleaning.

The adoption of interdental brushes is continuously increasing as a preventive approach to oral care. These interdental brushes play a crucial role in cleaning between teeth and can help to avoid more significant dental problems such as cavities, gum disease and tooth loss. Many market players focusing on interdental brushes to expand the market.

For instance, on November 30, 2022, Global Dents Aid Pvt Ltd, under the brand name STIM Oral Care released that it offers the Interdental brushes after decades of dominance in the global market for oral care products. Unlike a typical toothbrush, these brushes can clean in between your teeth. The health of teeth and gums can be maintained by using an interdental brush in addition to a toothbrush.

Further, the increasing prevalence of oral disorders, increasing clinical trials to develop more advanced interdental brushes by reducing the side effects, increasing awareness about the advantages offered by the interdental brushes and advancements in the development of novel interdental brushes to suit every individual are the factors expected to drive the market over the forecast period.
