Transition from Smart Home to Smarter Health At Home Fueling Technology Competition

At-home diagnostics is a rapidly growing field constantly exploring new and innovative solutions to address the challenges of diagnosing broad-spectrum disorders. Recent advancements in emerging at-home diagnostics technologies have attracted significant interest due to their potential to revolutionize the field. This shift has created promising opportunities for technology developers in the at-home diagnostics industry to focus their R&D activities on adopting these technologies for product development. The pandemic has accelerated the adoption of at-home diagnostics technologies, particularly after regulatory authorities granted emergency use authorization for over-the-counter at-home COVID-19 diagnostic tests. As a result, much of the R&D in emerging at-home diagnostics now includes smartphone apps for population-based healthcare data analytics.

The scope of at-home diagnostics technologies is multifaceted, encompassing technical, clinical decision support, privacy, user-friendliness, and economic domains. The primary focus of this study is to identify emerging technologies being adopted across the at-home diagnostics industry that have the potential to surpass conventional technologies. Given the widespread adoption of at-home diagnostics for cardiovascular health, infectious disease detection, and vital signs monitoring, along with the emergence of smartphone apps for data analytics, wearable devices for continuous care, and diagnostic tests that ensure at-home privacy, this study discusses the potential advantages and technology readiness level of these innovations.

Middle-tier medtech companies position themselves as technology developers, while consumer app start-ups focus on analytics, telemetry, and cloud-based services. Together with their top-tier collaborators, this study will highlight key players in this competitive industry that will shape its direction over the next 5 years.
