Scope

The integration of contactless payment options in transportation is making it easier for passengers to access transport services without the hassle of buying physical tickets or dealing with cash. Aligned with the ongoing trend, in November 2023, smart mobility technology solution provider, Conduent Transportation, announced that it was collaborating with Visa and Caisse d'Epargne CEPAC to implement a contactless payment system for the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropole on the Marseille public transport network. This would include buses, coaches, trams, and a metro railway. The system allows passengers to pay with contactless debit and credit cards, as well as NFC-enabled digital wallets.

As part of its National Retail Payments Strategy (2019-2024), Banque de France has formulated various measures that are being adopted by commercial banks and payment services providers. The plan includes promoting acceptance of card payments by merchants even for payments from EUR1 ($1.07), incorporating contactless functionality in every payment terminal in the country, and strengthening the security of electronic payments. With such measures in place, the frequency of card-based payments is set to increase further at the expense of cash.

Merchants are increasingly focusing on offering innovative payment solutions for convenient offline shopping. For instance, in May 2023, retail company Auchan partnered with payment service provider, Trigo, to launch cashier-free store. Customers need to enter the store by tapping their payment cards at the EasyOut tap kiosks. The use of biometric technology along with cameras installed in-store detects when products are taken from or returned to shelves, keeping track of products selected in a virtual cart. Once the customer completes their shopping and leaves the store, the correct amount is automatically debited from the card tapped and a receipt is sent to the store app before exit.
