Obesity is a chronic disease characterized by the accumulation of excess body fat. Individuals living with obesity may undergo metabolic dysfunction on account of excess adipose tissue. The diagnostic criteria for obesity are met by a body mass index (BMI) of 30kg/m2 or more (NIH, 2022a). This can lead to a state of chronic systemic inflammation, as well as a predisposition to comorbidities such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Clinical interventions aim to manage obesity by encouraging patient behavioral change, though cases with a BMI of 35kg/m2 or above may warrant bariatric surgery, particularly in the presence of comorbidities (NIH, 2022b).

Obesity onset is largely driven by behavior. The widening prevalence of obesogenic diets and sedentary lifestyles, both of which may lead to excess caloric intake, leads to an accumulation of body fat. Medical conditions, medications, and genetic factors that disrupt metabolism and endocrine function may predispose certain individuals to gain weight as well (NIH, 2022c).

  • This report provides an overview of the risk factors, comorbidities, and the global and historical epidemiological trends for overweight and obesity in the seven major markets (7MM: US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, and Japan).
  • The report includes a 10-year epidemiology forecast for the diagnosed and total prevalent cases of overweight and obesity. The diagnosed and total prevalent cases of overweight and obesity are segmented by age (5 years and older) and sex. They are further segmented by BMI into overweight classes I and II, as well as obesity classes I, II, and III. This epidemiology forecast for obesity is supported by data obtained from peer-reviewed articles and population-based studies. The forecast methodology was kept consistent across the 7MM to allow for a meaningful comparison of the forecast diagnosed prevalent cases of obesity across these markets.
