India passenger information system market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 26.17% over the forecast period to reach US$1,633.937 million in 2028, from US$320.946 million in 2021.The India Passenger Information System market comprises systems and technologies that provide passengers with real-time information and communication services in public transportation systems. Passenger Information System (PIS) helps passengers access essential information such as arrival and departure times, schedules, delays, route maps, and service updates, enhancing their overall travel experience and improving the efficiency of public transportation operations. With rapid urbanization in India, cities face challenges related to traffic congestion, pollution, and the need for efficient transportation systems. PIS helps address these challenges by providing passengers with real-time information, promoting public transportation use, and reducing reliance on private vehicles.

India has been witnessing rapid urbanization.

An increasing number of people are moving to cities in search of better job opportunities and a higher standard of living. This growth has led to higher demands for transportation services and infrastructure, creating a need for PIS solutions to manage and optimize these systems effectively. In this regard, the Indian government launched the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) program, known as "One Nation One Card," in 2019, which aims to enable seamless travel across different modes of transportation using a single card. PIS systems are integral to the implementation of this program, providing unified information and ticketing services. The Indian government has been actively promoting smart city projects and investing in the modernization of transportation infrastructure. As part of these initiatives, PIS is being adopted to improve public transportation's reliability, convenience, and safety, thereby driving market growth.

The advancement of digital technologies, such as smartphones, mobile apps, GPS, and wireless communication.

This has facilitated the development and implementation of advanced PIS solutions. These technologies enable seamless access to real-time information using the features of the internet and enhance the overall passenger experience, contributing to market growth. PIS also enhances passenger convenience by providing accurate and up-to-date information on transportation services. It also improves safety by offering emergency alerts, surveillance systems, and crowd management features. The growing emphasis on passenger comfort and safety drives the demand for PIS solutions.

Further, to ensure the safety and security of passengers, in August 2022, as part of its new Passenger Name Record Information Regulations 2022, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) mandated that airlines share PNR (passenger name record) information on all international passengers with the National Customs Targeting Centre-Passenger, 24 hours before the departure of flights. Additionally, with the rise in the use of mobile devices and the internet in India, connectivity and safety are ensured for passengers.

These developments underline the importance of PIS in urban environments and highlight the need for efficient transportation systems to cater to the growing urban population. The integration of PIS with expanding metro networks, the implementation of smart city initiatives, the adoption of BRT systems, and the focus on multimodal integration indicate how urbanization is driving the demand for PIS solutions in India.

By mode of transportation, the Indian passenger information system market is segmented into airways, railways, and roadways.

The Ministry of Railways has established a centrally managed train Display Network (RDN) encompassing over 2,000 train stations throughout India to improve passenger interaction at these gateway locations. Digital display screens of various sizes are erected strategically throughout the RDN, including footbridges, platforms, waiting areas, concourses, and within the AC coaches of first-class trains. The network will be flexible, delivering information from any data source to any display device, displaying context awareness, and providing railway users with pertinent information from the most appropriate sources. The information may come in live or recorded communications, audio, video, or social network content. In the future, RDN is expected to serve as a platform for social media and deliver important data and social messages to passengers.

Moreover, as per the 2022 press release by the Ministry of Railways, a centrally managed Railway Display Network was deployed at 2185 railway stations throughout India in a few years. Additionally, as per the Indian Railways, the number of passenger information display boards increased from 1,137 in 2020 to 1,147 in 2021.
