Hearing loss is the largest modifiable risk factor for dementia, and Japan, the world's oldest society, leaves it mostly untreated. Population surveys show that a substantial share of Japanese over 75 live with hearing loss, while only a small minority of those who could benefit from hearing devices use them. The adoption gap is among the widest in the developed world, and it persists despite a domestic manufacturing history, a dense retail network, and a policy environment that has begun connecting hearing health to dementia prevention.
