The liquid crystal display industry was built on Japanese materials. Polarizers, alignment films, protective films, and the glass-adjacent layers of an LCD panel came overwhelmingly from Japanese suppliers - Nitto Denko, Sumitomo Chemical, Fujifilm, Zeon, JSR, Toyobo, Toray - whose film technologies became industry standards. That world has been shrinking. Panel production migrated first to Korea and Taiwan and then decisively to China, where BOE and its peers now dominate large-panel output, and Chinese film makers such as Sunnypol have followed their customers up the value chain. The LCD materials business that Japan built is now a managed decline, and the question is what its assets and technologies become next.

The tension is that decline in one market coincides with emergence in others. OLED displays, now standard in smartphones and moving into larger formats, need ultrathin polarizers and new optical films. Augmented and virtual reality optics require precision polymer films with demanding retardation and surface properties. Semiconductor lithography and packaging consume films whose ancestors were display products. Japanese suppliers are repositioning along these lines: Zeon is steering ZeonorFilm toward semiconductor and AR/VR uses, JSR is reshaping its display portfolio following its privatization by JIC Capital, Fujifilm is converting WV and TAC film assets away from LCD, and Sumitomo Chemical has put its polarizer business under divestment review. The pace and destination of these pivots will determine which Japanese film franchises survive the LCD era.
