Italy foodservice industry is witnessing a drop in the sales growth rate since 2015, with the decrease in dine-out frequency of consumers. When choosing an eatery, consumers in Italy are increasingly looking for healthier options, which combine good nutritional value. With this rise in demand for organic and locally sourced food, the Italy foodservice market is dominated by local and Independent outlets with a market share of 53% in 2017.

High Impact of Online Foodservice Portals

Italy is the third-largest economy among the European Countries, but exceptionally high public debt burdens have rendered it vulnerable to fluctuation in the financial markets. With limited disposable income, consumers tend to move in favor of cheaper venues, such as fast food outlets or bars with happy hours, where consumers pay for drinks and are offered food free of charge.

With independent outlets dominating the Italy foodservice market, fast-food is becoming one of the most dynamic sectors in consumer foodservice along with street stalls/kiosks. Home delivery/takeaway is still a relatively underdeveloped segment in Italy compared to other European countries and is mostly composed of pizza outlets. Self-service cafeterias remain stable, most of them are chained outlets strategically located in prime locations such as shopping malls, airports, etc.

Competitive landscape

The Italy food service market is largely dominated by the local players. Independent restaurants in Italy gain more market share due to an increased priority for locally sourced food and ingredients. In 2016, fast food outlets registered an increase in value sales while traditional full-service restaurants suffered a considerable loss. Product innovation being the key strategy adopted by the local as well as international players.
