This report tracks vendor announcements, telco deployments, and standards-body activity in AI, automation, and autonomous networks (TAIA) across the global telecom sector. It draws on 330 tagged items dated 3Q24 through 3Q26 to date, sourced primarily from vendor and telco newsrooms and standards-body releases, supplemented by trade press where a primary source was unavailable. Telco AI/automation activity is assessed by deal type, theme, and geography. Every tracked item is attributed to a named source with a publication date, classified into one of six deal types, and tagged with a country and region where identifiable.
The report also includes a dedicated Telco Jobs Market section, drawing on MTN Consulting’s Global Telco Market Tracker and Telco Talent Tracker.
Across the globe, telcos are accelerating their shift from experimental AI pilots to live commercial deployments. That’s verified by market activity quadrupling from 18 tracked events in 3Q24 to 79 events in 2Q26 across 330 total tracked industry initiatives. Named commercial contracts now represent the largest single category at 107 deals (32% of the database), yet a sharp divide exists between mindshare and network revenue: market-share non-entities in traditional Telco Network Infrastructure (NI) like NVIDIA (39 mentions) and OpenAI (9 mentions) lead narrative visibility, while incumbents like Huawei ($38.4B Telco NI revenue, 17.8% share), Ericsson ($21.9B, 10.1% share), and Nokia ($17.4B, 8.0% share) capture the physical rollouts - and real revenues.
This technology transition unfolds against a stabilizing financial backdrop where annualized operator revenues hit $1.85T (+5.4% YoY) and EBIT margins recovered to 16.0% in 2025, even as capex intensity dropped to a decade low of 16.0% ($295.7B). Instead of driving immediate margin expansion, AI adoption is helping telcos sustain their ongoing workforce reduction efforts. Global telco headcount dropped 1.9% YoY to 4.34M in 4Q25 (a net loss of ~84,000 jobs), about the same rate of decline as before AI came on the scene. Total labor costs in 2025 held flat near $260B (22% of opex ex-D&A).
As Agentic AI and Generative AI emerge as the dominant operational theme with 80 tagged events, front-runners like SK Telecom (32 mentions, building a 2GW AI Cloud) and Verizon (-33% headcount since 2019, targeting AI-driven enterprise revenue growth with AI Connect) demonstrate that operators are moving from internal cost reduction toward monetizable AI infrastructure. But the primary focus remains on cost efficiency for now, as of 3Q26.
