Polyamides, commonly known as nylons, are regarded as the first true engineering thermoplastics. The name "Nylon" originates from the original trade name of DuPont's polyamide product, with commercial manufacturing beginning in 1939. The first practical uses of polyamide included nylon-bristled toothbrushes, followed by women's stockings, showcased for the first time at the 1939 New York World's Fair.
