The global sulphuric acid market demand stood at 281.0 million tons in 2025 and is projected to reach 352.2 million tons by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 2.6% during 2026-2034. Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) is a strong, highly corrosive mineral acid that is colourless, dense, and miscible with water. It is manufactured through the contact process, in which sulphur dioxide is oxidized to sulphur trioxide in the presence of a catalyst, typically vanadium pentoxide, followed by absorption to produce sulphuric acid. The market is supported by demand from fertilizer manufacturing, metal processing and mining, chemical production, petroleum refining, and emerging battery-related applications.
Sulphuric Acid Supply Analysis
The global sulphuric acid production capacity exceeded 290 million tons in 2025, with Asia-Pacific accounting for 60% of installed capacity. North America represented around 15%, followed by Western Europe at 12%, while the remaining capacity was distributed across Central and Eastern Europe, Central and South America, and the Middle East and Africa.
The global supply landscape includes companies operating dedicated sulphur-burning acid plants as well as producers recovering sulphuric acid as a by-product of non-ferrous metal smelting and refining. Major manufacturers include Aarti Industries Ltd., Aluminum Corporation of China, Aurubis AG, BASF, Boliden Group, Chemtrade Logistics, Grupo Mexico, Hindustan Zinc, Jiangxi Copper Corporation, Kanto Kagaku, Mosaic, Nouryon, OCP, Panoli Intermediates India Pvt. Ltd., PhosAgro Group, PVS, Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd., Vale, WeylChem International GmbH, Paradeep Phosphates Ltd., and other regional producers. China is one of the world's largest sulphuric acid producers, with reported capacity exceeding 160 million tons in 2025. Its production base includes Jiangxi Copper Company Limited, Yunnan Copper Co., Ltd., Tongling Nonferrous Metals Group Co., Ltd., Jinchuan Group Co., Ltd., Zijin Mining Group Co., Ltd., and other manufacturers.
Sulphuric Acid Trade Analysis
Chile was the largest importer of sulphuric acid in 2025, recording imports of 3,970.2 kilo tons, an increase of 9.9% compared with the previous year. China supplied around 37% of Chile's imports, while Peru accounted for 24%. The remaining imports originated from Japan, South Korea, Bulgaria, Belgium, Mexico, and other countries. Peru was the second-largest importer, with reported imports of 957 kilo tons in 2025, followed by other markets including Japan, South Korea, Bulgaria, Belgium, and Mexico.
China was the largest exporter of sulphuric acid in 2025, recording exports of 1,508 kilo tons. Major destination markets included Chile, Indonesia, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, India, and other countries. Indonesia ranked as the second-largest exporter, with reported exports of 683 kilo tons. Of this volume, around 670 kilo tons were shipped to China, while the remainder was exported to South Korea, Japan, Australia, and other destinations.
Sulphuric Acid Demand by Application
The global sulphuric acid market is segmented into fertilizers, metal processing and mining, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, petroleum refining, battery manufacturing and electronics, and other applications. Fertilizer manufacturing is the largest application, accounting for 50% of global demand in 2025. Chemicals represented around 15%, metal processing and mining 13%, petroleum refining around 9%, battery manufacturing and electrodes 8.5%, and other applications the remaining 4.5%.
Sulphuric acid is an essential feedstock in the production of phosphoric acid, which is subsequently used to manufacture phosphate fertilizers such as diammonium phosphate (DAP), monoammonium phosphate (MAP), and triple superphosphate (TSP). It is also used in the processing of phosphate rock and in the production of several industrial chemicals. In metal processing and mining, sulphuric acid is used for leaching and metal recovery, particularly in copper production, as well as in pickling and other metal-treatment processes. Additional applications include petroleum refining, chemical synthesis, and lead-acid battery manufacturing.
Sulphuric Acid Demand by Region
Global sulphuric acid demand reached 281.0 million tons in 2025, with Asia-Pacific accounting for around 55% of consumption. The region's leading position is supported by its large fertilizer manufacturing base, extensive metal processing and mining activities, and substantial chemical production capacity.
Asia-Pacific also has a substantial non-ferrous metal processing industry, with sulphuric acid used in copper, nickel, zinc, and other metal extraction and refining operations. China is a major participant in global copper processing, while Indonesia has become a significant centre for nickel mining and processing. These activities support demand for sulphuric acid in hydrometallurgical operations, particularly where acid is used for metal leaching. The combination of fertilizer production, industrial chemical manufacturing, and metal processing is anticipated to sustain the region's leading position throughout the forecast period.
Market Driver: Rising Phosphate Fertilizer Production
Rising demand for phosphate fertilizers is a key driver of the global sulphuric acid market. Sulphuric acid is used to process phosphate rock and produce phosphoric acid, which serves as a primary intermediate for fertilizers such as MAP, DAP, and superphosphates. As agricultural producers seek to maintain soil fertility and improve crop yields, demand for phosphorus-based nutrients remains an important factor influencing fertilizer production and, consequently, sulphuric acid consumption.
According to figures cited in the market data, global inorganic fertilizer production reached 208 million tons in 2023, while phosphorus-based fertilizer consumption was around 41 million tons. Global DAP production reached 35.4 million tons in 2024, while MAP production increased to around 31.8 million tons, compared with 30.3 million tons in 2023. These trends highlight the importance of phosphate fertilizer manufacturing as a source of industrial demand for sulphuric acid. Future consumption will also depend on fertilizer prices, agricultural economics, phosphate rock availability, and regional investment in fertilizer production capacity.
