The API security market stood at USD 1.3 billion in 2025 and is expected to grow at 31.2% between 2026 and 2032, reaching USD 8.6 billion by 2032. Application programming interfaces now sit at the centre of digital infrastructure, connecting applications, cloud environments, business platforms, mobile services, and connected devices, and carrying real-time data between customers, partners, and internal systems. Cloud-native architecture, microservices, DevSecOps, and platform business models have multiplied API counts faster than most security teams can track them.
The user base keeps expanding underneath all of it. The International Telecommunication Union counted 5.5 billion people online globally in 2024, or 68% of the world's population, which lifts the volume of online services, transactions, and mobile applications running on APIs.
Attackers have followed. Rather than probing network vulnerabilities, they target authentication processes, business logic, and exposed endpoints, which is why organisations are buying API discovery, runtime protection, behavioural analytics, posture management, and automated threat detection and folding them into wider security strategies.
Key Insights
API security platforms hold the larger component share at 80.0%, since buyers want discovery, posture management, and runtime protection in one place. Akamai counted 311 billion global web attacks in 2024. Services grow faster, at 31.7%.
API discovery and inventory management is the largest capability at 30.5%, since visibility precedes control.
API threat analytics and fraud detection grows fastest at 31.3%, tracking business-logic abuse. Postman found 51% of developers concerned about unauthorised or excessive API calls from AI agents in 2025.
Cloud is the largest deployment mode at 65.5%. The Cloud Native Computing Foundation reported 15.6 million developers using cloud-native technologies in 2025, with API gateways used by 50% of backend developers and microservices by 46%. Hybrid grows fastest, at 31.9%.
Large enterprises hold 85.5% on API estate scale. SMEs grow faster at 32.0%, and the OECD D4SME survey found only 27% of them with robust or advanced digital security frameworks in 2024.
BFSI is the largest end user at 25.0%, running digital banking, payments, and authentication over APIs. The World Bank reported 79% of adults globally holding an account with a bank or mobile money provider in 2024.
Retail and e-commerce grows fastest at 31.5%, as storefronts, payment gateways, and marketplaces connect through APIs.
North America holds the largest regional share at 45.5%. CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog held more than 1,300 actively exploited vulnerabilities in 2024.
The U.S. leads the region, and the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Centre received 859,532 suspected internet-crime complaints in 2024. In Canada, the Cyber Centre blocked an average of 6.6 billion potentially malicious actions per day across protected government systems.
Asia-Pacific grows fastest at 32.5% on fintech, e-commerce, and mobile-first services. GSMA projects the region's mobile internet users reaching roughly 1.4 billion by 2030.
China's online payment users passed 1 billion in 2024, per the State Council. In India, the Press Information Bureau reported API Setu publishing more than 6,000 APIs and facilitating over 312.01 crore transactions across government systems.
Europe is substantial, with Eurostat finding 93% of EU enterprises implementing at least one ICT security measure in 2024.
AI is changing detection. ISC2 found 30% of cybersecurity teams had integrated AI security tools in 2025, with 42% evaluating them, and Salt Security launched Autonomous Threat Hunting within its API Protection Platform.
Expertise is the constraint. APIs are created and retired continuously, and ISC2 put the cybersecurity workforce gap at 4.8 million in 2024.
Microsoft reported 16.3% of the global population using generative AI tools in 2025, multiplying machine-to-machine traffic.
The market is fragmented across cybersecurity vendors, cloud security providers, application security specialists, and API startups.
Salt Security launched Salt Code in June 2026 within its Agentic Security Platform, and Cloudflare opened beta on its Web and API Vulnerability Scanner in March 2026. Palo Alto Networks acquired Protect AI for about USD 500 million in July 2025, Cequence Security partnered with Inspira Enterprise in April 2025, and Akamai Technologies acquired Noname Security for about USD 450 million in June 2024.
