Market Highlights

Cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) is a trenchless (no-dig) rehabilitation process employed for repairing pipelines. It is a non-intrusive, seamless, jointless pipe with a pipe used to rehabilitate sewer pipes, industrial gas pipes, potable water pipes, and gravity pipes, which can be conducted within pipes ranging from a diameter of 6 inches to 120 inches. For this, the manufacturing of CIPP liners must adhere to various standards set by ASTM and comply with emission regulations from regulatory bodies like OSHA.

North America remains the biggest market for CIPP in 2023 and is predicted to do so for the duration of the forecast period. This is because there are a lot of pipelines in North America, particularly in the United States. The United States alone has about 17.9 billion feet of drainage pipes and lateral-based sewers that are older than 50 years and need maintenance, according to the environmental and labor organization BlueGreen Alliance Foundation.

The major factors that are continuously fuelling the growth of the CIPP market are infrastructure for aging potable and sewage water, rising expenditure by municipalities on utility and pipeline rehabilitation, growing awareness regarding the advantages of trenchless methods, and superior performance of CIPP compared to other trenchless technologies. Consequently, the overall North American CIPP market is estimated to grow at a decent CAGR of 4.7% during the forecast period, to reach a value of US$ 2.4 Billion in 2030.

Recent Market JVs and Acquisitions:

  • In 2024, the Vortex Companies announced the acquisition of Applied Felts Inc., positioning itself to deliver a direct, united offering to the market.
  • In 2023, Aegion announced the acquisition of C&L Water Solutions, Inc., a full-service trenchless pipeline rehabilitation service provider in Colorado. C&L Water Solutions plans to operate under its current company name in the near term.
  • In 2023, Aegion announced the acquisition of Standard Pipe Services, a preferred provider of trenchless repair services throughout the Delaware-Maryland-Pennsylvania tri-state area. Standard Pipe Services' employees and facilities will remain in place in Delaware operating under the Insituform name.
  • In 2023, Aegion announced the acquisition of Infraspec Services, Inc., a corporation that specializes in trenchless water rehabilitation services in Quebec, Canada. Infraspec plans to operate under its current company name in the near term.
  • Based on the resin type, the market is classified as polyester resin, vinyl ester resin, and epoxy resin. Our analysis suggests that polyester resin-based CIPP is expected to remain the dominant resin segment, whereas epoxy resin-based CIPP is expected to be the fastest-growing segment in the foreseen future. As Polyester has strong chemical resistance, low tensile elongation, and high flexural modulus, polyester resins are mostly employed in stormwater and sewer pipe rehabilitation. Its demand is further increased by lower costs when compared to epoxy and vinyl ester resins. Epoxy resin is one of the more environmentally friendly options for CIPP, which emits fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and no hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). Since epoxy resin is the only resin that satisfies NSF/ANSI 61 potable water criteria, epoxy resin-based CIPP is preferably utilized for the restoration of potable water pipelines.
  • Based on the fabric type, the market is segmented into polyester fabric, glass fabric, and other fabrics. Polyester is likely to remain the most dominant fabric type, whereas glass fabric is expected to be the fastest-growing fabric type in the market during the forecast period. In comparison to other fabrics, polyester fabric is very reasonably priced and meets the ASTM D461 standard while exceeding the required tensile strength. It has been recognized as the best fabric for high surface tension and ideal resin transport. When UV curing is used for CIPP, glass fabric is the recommended material of choice. The primary rationale behind opting for glass fabric liners with UV curing over felt liners cured in water or steam is that UV curing produces environmentally harmful byproducts.
  • Based on the curing type, the market is segmented into hot water curing, steam curing, and UV curing. Among these three types, steam curing remains dominant in the market due to its shorter curing time and the strength of the finished products. Heat transfers much faster in the steam process than in the hot water method, the total curing period is shorter in the steam process. In addition, steam cure systems use less water to set up on the construction site than hot water cure systems, which can require considerable amounts of water. Throughout the projected period, UV curing is anticipated to continue to grow at the fastest pace in the industry. UV liners can be delivered straight to the job site ahead of schedule because they don't require refrigeration. They are not temperature-sensitive, help reduce emissions, and are three to five times stronger than traditional felt CIPP liners.
  • Based on the coating type, the market is classified as polypropylene (PP)-coated CIPP, polyethylene (PE)-coated CIPP, polyurethane (PU)-coated CIPP, non-coated CIPP, and other coatings CIPP. Out of these coating types, PP-coated CIPP is expected to remain the most dominant segment in the market. This is due to its exceptional elasticity, ease of handling, attractive price-to-performance ratio, greater thickness compared to conventional coatings, strong bonding with the felt, and resistance to hydrolysis and chemical attack
  • In terms of country, The USA is projected to remain the largest market for CIPP during the forecast period. It is the largest market for CIPP in North America as well as in the world. Most of the pipeline construction in the region was done post-World War II and requires rehabilitation with CIPP, the most suitable method for pipe rehabilitation.
