Cotton is not only the most important fiber crop, but also an important oil crop, and an important raw material for textiles and fine chemicals. Cotton can not only be made into fabrics of various specifications, but also be widely used in many industries such as industry, medicine, cosmetics care, and paper processing. Cotton plays a very important role in modern life. Whether in the fields of textiles, agriculture, industry or medicine, it is an indispensable and important resource.
At present, the world's major cotton producing countries are China, the United States, India, Brazil and Australia. According to CRI analysis, India, the United States and China are the three countries with the greatest influence in the global cotton market. In terms of output, China is the world's largest cotton producer, with an annual output that has a significant advantage globally, followed by India and the United States.
Indonesia is one of the world's top ten textile producers. The textile and textile products industry is an important part of its economy. Cotton, as the main raw material of the textile industry, has a strong demand. However, Indonesia's cotton planting area is small and easily affected by climatic conditions. The cotton yield is low and cannot meet the needs of the domestic textile industry. Therefore, the Indonesian cotton market is highly dependent on imported products.
According to CRI data, Indonesia's cotton imported US$811 million in 2024. The Indonesian government actively promotes the development of Indonesia's textile and garment industry. With the increase in domestic demand for textiles and clothing and the growth of textile and clothing exports, it is expected that the demand for cotton in Indonesia will continue to grow in the next few years.
According to CRI analysis, Indonesia's main cotton import sources include the United States, Australia, Brazil, India, Singapore and Greece. The top three countries for Indonesia's cotton imports from 2021 to 2024 were Brazil, the United States and Australia, which together account for more than 60% of Indonesia's total cotton imports.
According to CRI analysis, the companies exporting cotton to Indonesia were mainly overseas traders from 2021 to 2024. The main importers of Indonesian cotton were related companies such as the textile and clothing industry between 2021 and 2024.
With the development of Indonesia's textile and clothing industry, the demand for Indonesia's cotton market will continue to grow. According to CRI analysis, due to the low cotton production in Indonesia and the small growth potential, Indonesia's cotton imports are expected to continue to grow in the next few years.
