Creosote is one of the traditionally used products and has been put into practice as a heavy-duty product type since 1948. It is manufactured by distillation of coal tar at high temperatures. The pesticides which use creosote as an active material is used as a wood preservative to protect it against mites, fungi, and termites. Currently, creosote is used for commercial purposes only and indoor use of creosote has been prohibited. The outdoor applications include railroad ties and utility poles.

ACQ is a water-based wood preservative that helps to prevent decay from insects and fungi. It also has relatively low risks, based on its components of quaternary ammonium compounds and copper oxide.
