Dichloroethane Market

The future of the global dichloroethane market looks promising with opportunities in the construction, automotive, and electrical & electronic markets. The global dichloroethane market is expected to reach an estimated $3.8 billion by 2035 from $2.1 billion in 2027 with a CAGR of 4.9% from 2027 to 2035. The major drivers for this market are rising demand for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and growing demand for this substrate from the building & automotive industries.

  • Lucintel forecasts that, within the application category, vinyl chloride monomer is expected to witness a higher growth over the forecast period due to strong downstream demand for PVC resin production.
  • Within the end use category, construction is expected to witness the highest growth over the forecast period due to rising construction activity requiring PVC-based building materials.
  • In terms of regions, APAC is expected to witness the highest growth over the forecast period due to expanding PVC and plastics manufacturing capacity across APAC.

Emerging Trends in Dichloroethane Market

Starting from 2025 and to 2027, market conditions for dichloroethane will be shaped by the conditions of the PVC market. Manufacturers will also have to deal with higher costs of energy, more stringent environmental laws and chemical facility location-related regulation (CFLR), and more. Lucintel predicts that, with the continued growth of the Asian construction markets, the market will also become more competitive, and the companies that will have an advantage will be the companies that have better logistics to ship their products to the growth markets from Japan and South Korea.

  • Integrated Production: From an economic and industry integration perspective, in order to control the margin in the value chain, integration of chlor-alkali, ethylene, dichloroethane and VCM will continue. New projects in the PVC value chain in the Middle East and China will also boost this trend.
  • Energy End Emissions Efficiency: Eastern and Central European producers of dichloroethane and VCM will implement capital intensive projects to improve their heat and carbon integration. These projects are expected to provide a greater competitive edge once new plants are commissioned.
  • Supply Chain Diversification: Producers and end users in various regions are seeking to cut their reliance on single source supplies, as evidenced by the Middle East and North America constructing more transport routes to Latin America and Asia. This will also encourage more area-specific storage and longer-term contracts.
  • Resilient Demand for PVC: Although the construction industry accounts for the majority of global PVC demand, other industries such as electrical and health care are also creating higher PVC demand. Global PVC demand will be dependent on global infrastructure and other large-scale projects.
  • Digitization of Processes: Refineries and petrochemical plants are investing in digitization to allow for better process control, emission control and maintenance. While the global economy is recovering and energy prices are increasing, many refiners are investing digitally rather than in new infrastructure to cut emissions.

The expansion of the dichloroethane market will be more regionally focused, and producers in the Middle East and Asia will gain market share at the expense of Europe. The main demand for PVC will create a floor for the market, but the rate of production will be determined by strategic investments and the focus on large-scale construction projects.

Recent Developments in the Dichloroethane Market

The market for dichloroethane is expected to pick up from 2025 to 2027 as producers of PVC adjust their plant location and energy balance. More integrated producers will prefer to expand rather than rationalize their PVC/EDC and EDC/VCM units. Overall, flexible capacity additions to meet local infrastructure and chlor-alkali needs will drive the market. It is expected that the flow of the freight and carbon-related costs will impact the trade of dichloroethane.

  • Production: In 2025, Shintech will complete an integrated EDC and VCM unit in Louisiana, which will strengthen PVC production in the U.S. and potentially shift imports to South America and Asia.
  • Capacity Rationalization: High energy and carbon costs to produce chlor-alkali and downstream PVC in Europe have prompted producers to evaluate rationalization options. In 2025, INEOS Inovyn announced the closure of several of its European chlor-alkali and PVC plants. Similar closures are expected during the next five years.
  • Collaboration: Producers and technology companies are developing low-carbon-footprint processes for chlorine and PVC, using initiatives like electrification and renewable energy. Some chemical producers in Europe signed power purchase agreements in 2025. Customer need for decreasing emissions will drive PPA-related purchasing decisions.
  • Legislation: The European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, beginning in January 2026, will impose carbon costs on import chains of energy-intensive materials. This mechanism is expected to create a competitive market for dichloroethane and PVC, creating incentives for improving the reporting of emissions along the supply chain.
  • Market Conditions: Long-term contracts for raw materials and transport of PVC have been established to ensure stable plant operation based on variation in ethylene and chlorine markets. Many thousands of tons of PVC have been shipped annually from North America to various locations. Long-term contracts will favor integrated producers and consumers.

From the information above, it is expected that in the next few years, the market for PVC will be the primary driver for the market for dichloroethane. New production capacity for PVC and dichloroethane will be produced in areas that have the best combination of energy, carbon, and freight costs. During this time, integrated producers of PVC will be at an advantage, and merchant producers will see increased price volatility.

Strategic Growth Opportunities in the Dichloroethane Market

Dichloroethane markets will change between 2024 and 2026 with the growth of PVC infrastructure, changing feedstocks, and more strict environmental laws. Producers of dichloroethane can lose margin and Lucintel estimates that adding flexibility to the supply chain and producing less emission intensive product can add value. The most value can be created if producers differentiate their product and focus on specific customer needs. The most value can be created if a producer integrates with a customer to provide a reliable source of a chlor-alkali derivative.

  • The Growth of PVC Infrastructure: The growth of water and electrical infrastructure in the Middle East and Southeastern Asia will create more demand for PVC which will increase the demand for dichloroethane. The 2025 Union budget of India allocated ₹11.11 trillion for capital expenditure to increase the pace of infrastructure construction. The rapid growth of PVC infrastructure will increase demand in regions where PVC and other products are no longer in demand.
  • Integrated Supply: Customers prefer integrated suppliers because freight costs and variability of feedstocks are reduced. According to the 2021 report of the European Commission, chemical production in the EU was still 10% below 2021 levels. It is expected that integrated suppliers will be rewarded with long term contracts in the next 3 to 5 years.
  • Low-carbon Production: The ability to account for carbon in PVC production has created an opportunity for renewable energy and low-carbon electrolysis. The EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) officially launched in January 2026. In the interim, producers who have measured and reduced the carbon footprint of their operations may charge a premium. Converters and other end-users will acknowledge these suppliers.
  • Circular PVC: Both mechanical and chemical recycling of PVC will increase the need for dichloroethane in the future. The new EU Packaging Waste Directive will encourage circular economy principles and should improve the quality of feedstock and incentivize the use of recycled PVC.
  • Specialized Customers: The pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries, by virtue of the nature of their products and the requirements of their customers, tend to be less price sensitive and more amenable to smaller higher-margin sales. According to a 2026 report, the global pharmaceutical market was valued at $1.6 trillion in 2025. Innovative agreements and storage will provide new streams of revenue for suppliers of PVC.

To meet the changing demands and to secure long-term contracts, PVC suppliers will need to invest and integrate new and more efficient production and distribution facilities. Competition will be more acute in Europe and Asia.

Dichloroethane Market Drivers and Challenges

There are multiple factors such as technological, economic, environmental and legal that influence the market for dichloroethane. Those factors along with process and innovation in the industry impact the overall supply and demand for the product. Lucintel believes that growing and developing local infrastructure would impact the market the most in the coming years. However, the industry still faces several challenges including the need for improved process safety and control as well as unstable raw material and product costs.

The factors responsible for driving this market include:

  • Demand for PVC: There is continuous demand for dichloroethane for the production of PVC which in turn is used in the manufacture of various products used in construction and other industries. It is estimated that the total world PVC consumption was over 25 million tons in 2005. Furthermore, it is estimated that the world PVC demand will continue to increase in the next few years due to the continued development of countries, especially in the Asian and Middle Eastern regions. The continuous construction of buildings and other facilities in these regions will create an increased demand for PVC and consequently for dichloroethane in the next few years.
  • Integrated Manufacturing: Raw materials and intermediates are increasingly being integrated in the production of derivatives (e.g., integration of ethylene chlorination, dichloroethane, and vinyl chloride monomer production, and PVC production). From a supply security and logistics standpoint, this integrated approach is more attractive. Large-scale integrated facilities, with multiple units and levels, which leverage the chemistry of ethylene and chlorine for various downstream productions, are gaining traction. These large-scale, integrated facilities (which use multiple successive production units) have the potential to improve yield and margin. In the next 3 to 5 years, the integrated facilities will gain further strength and market dominance, while increased competition will be seen on smaller, independent and less integrated facilities.
  • Technological Developments: New technologies such as advanced process controls, furnace and catalysts, and improved heat integration and recovery, enhanced the productivity of the chemical industry. In 2025, several chemical facilities focused on maximizing equipment effectiveness by employing predictive maintenance. While improving uptime, these systems reduce emissions and improve process efficiency. Investment in process and technology will help chemical producers meet strict environmental and safety regulations. These investments will help chemical facilities improve equipment effectiveness and overall facility performance.
  • Developing Infrastructure: Investment in pipelines and other infrastructure has increased the trade and use of dichloroethane. In 2025, ongoing infrastructure projects in growing countries will have constructed roads, housing, water and power systems, and other projects that will increase the use of PVC products. Reliable infrastructure will also allow the transport of raw materials to and from production sites. From a chemical industry perspective, building roads and other infrastructure will be a catalyst for building new PVC production capacity. This will increase the use of dichloroethane in areas of the world where the demand for PVC is outstripping the supply.
  • Advancing Technology: Leading industry players are actively designing PVC value chains to incorporate more innovative and lower-emission PVC formulations and chemical recycling. PVC's lower-emissions potential and improved recycling have focused the industry on producing PVC more efficiently. From 2022 to 2025, numerous initiatives have been started to more effectively utilize the large volume of PVC that has been produced and is no longer used. There have also been initiatives to improve the overall recycling rate of the industry and to encourage producers to follow the standards and guidelines of the circular economy.

The challenges facing this market include:

  • Environmental Regulations: Dichloroethane is regulated because of its volatility. This increases costs for producers due process requirements and controls for exposure, release, and transportation. Producers in regulated areas in 2025 were required to manage exposure limits at levels less than 1 part per million. In the 2025 outlook, more stringent emissions and workplace safety requirements were expected to increase the time and cost for regulatory compliance, increase capital expenditures and delays in bringing new capacity on-line. Finally, these requirements may lead consumers to prefer alternative chemicals.
  • Feedstock and energy volatility Dichloroethane is produced from ethylene and chlorine which increases price sensitivity. In 2025, significant cost and price differences in petrochemical and energy markets continued to distort production and trade. Facilities located away from integrated energy and feedstock parks were especially impacted. The price sensitivity of producers will continue to be impacted by changes in the oil and gas market and integrations of regional electricity markets. These will likely lead to different levels of competitiveness for various production centres.
  • Risks: Dichloroethane poses a risk to employees and the public during transport and storage. Various laws and regulations govern the transport and storage of this chemical. Industrial chemical operators have implemented special procedures to manage these risks. The risks associated with storage and transport of dichloroethane include loss of business due to lack of inventory, liability from injury or damage to the environment and reputation, and increased government scrutiny. These risks are expected to increase in the next 3 to 5 years due to aging and more stringent regulations on transportation of hazardous materials. To maintain reliable transport of this chemical in the next 3 to 5 years, producers are expected to invest a significant amount of capital to improve the integrity of the production and transport facilities, and to train the workforce to manage transport risks.

While the above factors create an opportune environment for new or existing producers of dichloroethane, there will be a fine balance for new producers to enter and thrive due to factors such as raw materials availability and price; stringent environmental, safety and health regulations; cost and availability of transportation and logistics services, and volatility of the energy market.
