Whiskey Market
The future of the global whiskey market looks promising with opportunities in the on-trade and off-trade markets. The global whiskey market is expected to reach an estimated $86.2 billion by 2035 from $64.8 billion in 2027 with a CAGR of 4.1% from 2027 to 2035. The major drivers for this market are the increasing demand for premium spirits, the rising disposable income among consumers, and the growing popularity of craft distilleries.
- Lucintel forecasts that, within the product type category, irish whiskey is expected to witness higher growth over the forecast period due to rising global trend and increasing demand for premium whiskey.
- Within the distribution channel category, on-trade is expected to witness the highest growth over the forecast period due to lower costs of production and smoother whiskey.
- In terms of regions, APAC is expected to witness the highest growth over the forecast period due to increasing disposable income and trend for the high-end spirits market.
Emerging Trends in Whiskey Market
Between the years 2025 and 2027 the whiskey market is expected to shift and be driven by the demand for premium, transparent and operation-specific whiskeys. Distillers are trying to strike a balance between the slowing whiskey markets of the world and the new, fast growing markets of India, Brazil and Southeast Asia. In addition to the trends mentioned above, Lucintel has identified changes in consumer preferences, as well as advancements in whiskey production and finishing technologies.
- Premium Whiskey: Premiumization of the whiskey market is expected to continue, despite the current global economic climate. As a result, distillers are expected to further extend their high-margin, cask-finished and aged whiskeys.
- Sustainability: Distillers have set new targets to improve water and carbon efficiency of their distilleries; Changes to various countries' sustainability and ESG laws are also expected to impact the alcoholic beverages industry.
- Digital Manufacturing: Further integration of data, automation and continuous improvement of supply chains are expected to enhance production flexibility, inventory visibility and overall supply chain loss.
- Supply Chain Changes: Tariffs and disruptions in international freight have forced more local bottling. Indian markets have created opportunities for spirits producers, particularly for those managing export exposure. Companies have also adapted their sourcing. More decentralized whiskey supply chains will allow suppliers quicker access to high-growth markets and will be less disruptive.
- Diverse Alcoholic Products: One of the key market trends for whiskey is the growing demand for alcohol alternatives and alcoholic drinks in various formats and serving strengths. The IWSR predicts no-alcohol spirits will have a compound annual growth rate of 7% from 2023 to 2027. Whiskey producers can use flexibility in product formulation and alcohol volume to capture opportunities in the no-alcohol spirit market while still producing traditional whiskey products.
To gain long-term growth in the whiskey market, producers should invest to maintain their historical position while also improving productivity and generating efficiency. Product segmentation and price differentiation should be implemented to capture opportunities in high-growth markets, including emerging markets. Further, dependable and sustainable supply would strengthen a company's position in the market.
Recent Developments in the Whiskey Market
Lucintel expects investments in production and route-to-market projects to increase compared to investments in M&A from 2025 to 2027. Distilleries and other alcohol production facilities will remain primary areas of interest for investments. Lucintel expects that brands and distilleries with a lower cost structure will gain more market share.
- Capital Projects: Pernod Ricard announced an investment of £250 million in February 2025, to build a Scotch whisky distillery and maturation facility in Scotland. The investment should help Pernod Ricard meet the global increase in demand for Scotch whisky.
- M&A: Diageo acquired the Bols Spirits Company in April 2025, for approximately €75 million. Bols is one of the oldest spirit companies in the world and is based in The Netherlands. The acquisition strengthened Diageo's spirits distribution and created a premium spirits brand.
- Alliance: Suntory and Beam both operate spirits companies in Japan. In January 2025, they signed an agreement to market and distribute spirits in India. The agreement should increase Suntory and Beam's spirits sales in India.
- Technology: Many Scotch Whisky producers began using digital supply chain traceability in 2025. One system helped trace and protect the integrity of millions of bottles of Scotch Whisky.
- Government Approval: In May 2025, Scotland and India signed a free-trade agreement. As part of the agreement, duties on Scotch whisky would be phased down from 150% to 40% over a few years. Currently, the high duties, combined with the economic costs of transport and trade, mean that the legal importation of whisky from Scotland is not economically viable. It is expected that the lower duties would improve the economic situation and increase legal imports. The goal would be to improve the situation for legal imports enough to entice consumers to purchase whisky from legal channels.
The inconsistent global situation for the whisky industry, combined with the remaining impacts of the pandemic, is expected to continue. Many consumers are focused on savings and have delayed or reduced purchasing of luxury goods, including whisky. In contrast, India, as well as other rising economies and travel retail, offer opportunities for the premium and super-premium American whiskies. Discipline, focus and strategic investments in modernization and expansion will allow companies to be more flexible and efficient. This will allow producers to better position themselves for the expected market rebalancing, especially if they can obtain aged whisky to meet consumer needs.
Strategic Growth Opportunities in the Whiskey Market
Lucintel predicts shifts in Whiskey consumer demand, like premiumization and tourism, will create new opportunities in the market through 2026. Challenges such as consolidation in distribution and e-commerce will be offset by demand, while cost-altering events like climate change will put pressure on the raw materials. Lucintel's report indicates that while the whiskey market will be profitable, focused strategies for each channel will produce better results than volume strategies.
- Limited Release and Aged Whiskey: Aged whiskey and limited release single malts can be very profitable. The Macallan released 40 mL of a 1948 whiskey in January 2025 for $75,000. During the next several years, collections and the tourism market will fuel the premium market.
- Alcohol Alternatives: Lower alcohol and no alcohol whiskey products can be profitably integrated into the whiskey market. The IWSR predicts the no and low alcohol market will gain 7% of the alcohol market by 2028.
- South and Southeast Asia: The markets of this region have potential for the whiskey market, and can be profitably entered after the markets of North America and Europe. The Indian whiskey market was 230 million 9 liter cases in 2024.
- Sustainability in Packaging and Production: Distillers are utilizing several methods including light-weighting of glass, use of renewable energy and water, and distillation to reduce their carbon footprint and meet retailer goals. Diageo has reduced its carbon footprint by 47% since 2007. Sustainability impacts corporate and retail purchases and influences product listings.
- Digital Traceability and Direct Sales: Serialized and/or 2D barcodes can be used to verify product purchases and resale, as well as, facilitate virtual product samples. In March 2025, the Scotch Whisky Association represented 140 Scotch Whisky producers. Effective use of traceability, as well as, online price and availability controls enhances product value and reduces aftermarket price erosion.
There are opportunities for distillers to capture additional value through the use of premium packaging and formats. Those focused on volume will have limited opportunities for long term value growth. Adaptation of proven business models will enable value growth. Effective use of traceability and control of product flow will enhance brand value. Integration of sustainability and digital strategies will provide a competitive edge.
Whiskey Market Drivers and Challenges
The whiskey market is expected to rise due to several factors including changing consumer taste, innovations in technology and better methods of whiskey production and distribution, goals to produce alcoholic beverages in a sustainable manner, and changes in trade laws and regulations. Global recessions negatively impact the market. The easing of trade restrictions and the recovery of the world economy in the aftermath of COVID-19 is projected to invigorate the market in the coming years. Lucintel predicts rising competition among market players, lower average selling prices and longer-term market investments.
The factors responsible for driving this market include:
- Changes in Consumer Preference: As preferences become more discerning, market participants are incentivized to release premium whiskey products. The Scotch Whisky Association reported that in 2024-2025 Scotch Whisky maintained its status as one of the largest segments of international trade. Distilleries are increasing their aging stocks in order to release a greater variety of higher end products in the luxury market, but it is expected that the majority of Scotch Whisky product offerings will remain in the standard and value segments.
- Product Innovation and Technology: Consistent and distinct whiskey variants are developed using advanced data analysis, control systems, and maturation and filtration techniques. Innovation has also expanded the whiskey category to include flavored, ready-to-drink, and other forms. Double-digit growth in the non-alcoholic whiskey segment in the U.K. in 2025, motivated distillers to produce related products. In the next five years, technology will enable distillers to control and manage whiskey variants, while maintaining brand integrity.
- Sustainability and Resource Optimization: While improving distillery processes to reduce energy and water consumption, some distilleries have focused on optimizing other processes along the value stream. These processes include the use of renewable energy, sustainable grain and bottle source, and improved waste management. The EU initiated strict rules to reduce distillery packaging in 2015, which negatively impacted beverage producers. In the next five years, producers will invest to reduce operating costs by improving resource management and sustainability, while adversely impacting profits due to high energy and logistics costs.
- Expanding Distribution: Whiskey distillers are innovating and expanding the ways in which they distribute their products through the implementation of digital commerce, subscriptions, online auctions and hospitality. Distillers can educate their consumers on their product through digital mediums. Distillers located outside of major population centers must consider how best to provide their consumers access to their products through a variety of channels, while still considering the legal and logistical challenges of shipping and distributing alcoholic beverages.
- Increased Production and Automation: Whiskey producers continue to improve their production and distribution operations through the creation of larger and more automated distribution systems. During the period under review, producers continued to enhance their aging facilities and distribution capacity. With the improvement of supply chain and logistical operations, distillers are positioned to be more responsive to consumers located outside of their home market. However, in their haste to meet growing demand, some producers may create internal competition for finite market share.
The challenges facing this market include:
- Raw Materials and Supply Chain: Uncertain grain and other supply harvests combined with geo-political and logistical disruptions make long term production planning virtually impossible and increase the cost of producing spirits. Volatility in the cost of energy and other inputs also increase the cost and uncertainty of production. The costs of transportation and storage of finished goods also add to the uncertain costs of bringing a product to market. February 2025 was another month of increasing volatility in global markets for agricultural and other basic inputs. Producers can be expected to make changes to the sources and sizes of the inventories they hold over the next several years, as well as changes to the design and size of packaging. The effects of these changes will be more felt by smaller producers.
- Regulation and International Trade: Variations in the laws of different countries regarding spirits labeling and other regulations create difficulties for spirit producers. Producers also face taxes and tariffs that vary by country. The unpredictability of international trade policies increases the uncertainty of the spirit business. The next several years are expected to create greater fragmentation of international trade and increase the cost of doing business. Producers will need greater flexibility of business pack and label scale operations to address market requirements to export and sell their products.
- Climate Change and Long Production Cycles: Varied and extreme weather conditions increase the need for energy to produce grain and negatively impact grain quality and availability. Also, changing weather conditions make it hard to predict when and where adequate water will be available. Whiskey's long maturing process makes the product vulnerable to numerous changing conditions. Decisions made about production a number of years earlier may not reflect the changing conditions or the preferences of the consumers. In July 2025 a number of farming areas reported growing conditions and crop prospects of concern to them. In the next 3-5 years it is likely that assuring an adequate and reliable supply of grain will require water re-use systems and other measures to protect the quality of whiskey in storage and supply chain.
Wide and varying consumer preferences, along with digitization and other recent changes in the market place, make the production and distribution of whiskey more competitive. Other factors including cumulative impact of climate changes, variation and volatility in costs of inputs, and long production cycles increase the risk for producers. Increasing competitiveness, consumer choice and sustainability will require further investment and improvements in production, distribution, and supply chain for whiskey. Such changes will need to occur within the legal and regulatory environment of various markets. Because of these, it is likely that improvements in production and distribution will be concentrated in regions where whiskey is predominantly produced.
