Chemical mechanical planarization is the process step that keeps modern chips buildable: after each layer is deposited, the wafer surface must be polished flat to atomic tolerances before the next layer goes on, and the polishing consumables - slurries of engineered abrasive particles and the polyurethane pads that carry them - are consumed continuously, making CMP one of the most reliable recurring-revenue franchises in semiconductor materials.
