Automotive Airbag Market Size, Share & Trends Analysis Report by Type (Frontal Airbags, Side-Impact Airbags, Knee Airbags, Rear-Window, Seat Cushion, and Other) by Vehicle Type (Passenger Cars, Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV), Heavy Commercial Vehicles (HCVs)) and by End Users (OEM, and Replacement), Forecast Period (2026-2035)
Industry Overview
Automotive airbag market was valued at $26.7 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $41.2 billion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 4.5% during the forecast period (2026-2035). The global automotive airbag market is expanding at a fast pace owing to the rising vehicle safety awareness, stringent vehicle safety regulations, technological advancements, and growth in automobile production. The growing involvement of government agencies and regulatory bodies in combating counterfeit and substandard airbags is driving the automotive airbag market. In 2024, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) seized over 490 counterfeit airbags, more than ten times the number seized in fiscal year 2023, emphasizing the scale of the issue and the narrowing enforcement measures. These efforts are expected to strengthen consumer trust and drive demand for certified, high-quality airbags.
Market Dynamics
Growth in Automotive Production
China is the largest vehicle market by both annual sales and manufacturing output globally, with domestic production expected to reach 35 million vehicles by 2025. According to the data from the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA), the country accounted for 42.4% of the global vehicle production, amounting to 30.2 million units in 2023. Additionally, the total car production in the country was 26.1 million units. Apart from the strong position of the country in the global automotive sector, stringent safety regulations for passenger safety, growing consumer demand for safety features, and technological advancements in airbags are also contributing to the overall growth of the market.
Impact of Recalls, Safety Measures, and Technological Advancements
The automotive airbag market is influenced by safety regulations and consumer awareness of vehicle crash protection. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Takata airbag recalls affected approximately 67 million vehicles due to airbags that could explode upon deployment, posing serious risks to occupants. Vehicle owners were advised to check for recalls using their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and have affected airbags replaced free of charge by authorized dealers. Certain vehicles were identified as higher risk and required immediate repair. Such incidents indicate the importance of reliable airbag technologies and adherence to safety standards.
Market Segmentation
Frontal Airbag Segment Dominates the market.
Airbags are supplemental protection and are designed to work best in combination with seat belts. Frontal airbags are generally designed to deploy in moderate to severe crashes and may deploy in even a minor crash. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, frontal airbags saved more than 50,457 lives from 1987 to 2017. Moreover, the next-generation front passenger airbag protects occupants in a wide range of frontal collision scenarios. It is beneficial in angled frontal impacts in which lateral collision forces can cause an occupant's head to rotate severely or slide off the airbag, increasing the chance of serious injury. The new airbag design reduces strain on brain tissue by 75% compared to the previous generation front passenger airbag. The new system utilizes four major components and three inflated compartments, including a center chamber and two outward-projecting side chambers, which create a wide base across the dash.
The global automotive airbag market is further divided by region, including North America (the US and Canada), Europe (the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Russia, and the Rest of Europe), Asia-Pacific (India, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, ASEAN Countries, and the Rest of Asia-Pacific), and the Rest of the World (the Middle East & Africa, and Latin America).
Asia-Pacific is Leading the Global Automotive Airbag Market
Asia-Pacific is leading the automotive airbag market, driven by India's regulatory push towards mandatory airbags has opened up opportunities for manufacturers. In January 2022, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had proposed that vehicles of category M1 (a motor vehicle used for carriage of passengers, comprising not more than 8 seats, in addition to the driver's seat), manufactured after 1st October 2022, shall be fitted with two side/side torso air bags, one each for the persons occupying front row outboard seating positions and two side curtain/tube air bags, one each for the persons occupying outboard seating positions. This has been notified to enhance safety for the vehicle occupants.
In 2025, Maruti Suzuki sold 393,572 cars, of which nearly 380,000 units were equipped with six airbags. Mahindra sold close to 93,000 such cars during the same period, accounting for 61% of its total sales of 152,067 units. Tata Motors sold around 65,000 six-airbag-equipped vehicles, which comprised 51% of its 129,369 units sold in the quarter.
The major companies operating in the global automotive airbag market include Autoliv, ZF Friedrichshafen AG, Joyson Safety Systems, Toyoda Gosei, Hyundai Mobis, among others. Market players are leveraging partnerships, collaborations, mergers, and acquisition strategies for business expansion and innovative product development to maintain their market positioning.
