The U.S. low and medium-voltage electrical equipment market was valued at USD 48.0 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 82.4 billion by 2032, growing at a CAGR of 8.0%. Growth is being driven by large-scale grid modernization, renewable energy expansion, and rising electrification across industrial and commercial sectors, with switchgear, transformers, and circuit protection devices forming the backbone of the country's electrical distribution network.

The scale of the modernization challenge is significant. Switchgear assemblies are the largest product category at 25% share, essential for power distribution, protection, and control across utilities and industrial facilities. Industrial automation components post the highest CAGR, at 15.5%, as smart manufacturing adoption accelerates; U.S. manufacturing contributes over USD 2.3 trillion to the economy, according to the Department of Commerce.

Low-voltage systems hold 80% share, the backbone of residential, commercial, and industrial distribution; the U.S. consumes roughly 4 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, per the EIA. Medium-voltage systems are growing faster, at 13.8% CAGR, tied to industrial electrification and grid investment.

Industrial applications lead at 45% share, driven by continuous high-consumption operations in manufacturing and oil & gas; industrial use accounts for about 26% of total U.S. electricity consumption. Utilities post the highest CAGR, at 16.3%, as grid expansion and renewable integration accelerate.

The South holds the largest regional share, at 45%, led by Texas and Florida; Texas alone generates over 500 terawatt-hours of electricity annually, the highest of any state, according to the EIA. The Midwest posts the highest regional CAGR, at 12.4%, fueled by automotive and heavy industrial expansion.

Digital and intelligent LV/MV equipment is a defining trend, as smart switchgear and IoT-enabled monitoring transform traditional distribution networks. The U.S. has already deployed over 100 million smart meters, strengthening real-time grid visibility.

Aging infrastructure modernization remains the biggest driver. Annual U.S. grid investment has surpassed USD 100 billion, and the Department of Energy has allocated up to USD 10.5 billion under its Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships program alone.

High equipment costs are a key restraint, since digital switchgear and automation systems carry significant upfront investment that's harder for smaller utilities and municipal operators to absorb, particularly given long replacement cycles and limited capital budgets.

SF6-free and modular switchgear present a clear opportunity, as traditional SF6 insulation carries a global warming potential nearly 24,000 times that of CO2. Utilities are increasingly setting phase-down targets as compact, modular alternatives gain traction in space-constrained urban settings.

Manufacturing expansion reflects strong confidence in the space: Siemens AG announced a USD 285 million U.S. manufacturing investment in March 2025, including new facilities in Fort Worth and Pomona, while ABB Ltd. committed USD 110 million the same year to expand electrification manufacturing and R&D.

The competitive landscape is semi-consolidated, with Siemens, Schneider Electric, ABB, and Eaton controlling large-scale utility and industrial contracts, while numerous regional manufacturers supply switchboards and panelboards to buyers pursuing multi-vendor procurement strategies.

Recent acquisition activity underscores consolidation at the top end: Littelfuse Inc. acquired Basler Electric Company in October 2025 for approximately USD 350 million to strengthen its grid and power-control capabilities, while Legrand Holding SA acquired Avtron Power Solutions the same month to expand its data-center power infrastructure presence.
