The global electric excavator market was valued at USD 2.55 billion in 2025 and is projected to rise to USD 3.00 billion in 2026. P&S Intelligence expects it to reach USD 8.20 billion by 2032, advancing at an 18.2% CAGR during 2026-2032. Contractors are moving past compact pilot machines. Full-shift medium excavators, high-capacity batteries, and cable-assisted platforms are widening the range of duty cycles that make commercial sense.
Cheaper batteries are helping. The International Energy Agency reported that average battery prices fell 8% in 2025, and that lithium iron phosphate packs were more than 40% cheaper per kWh than nickel manganese cobalt alternatives. Those cross-industry savings support larger packs, although construction-grade integration and charging equipment keep excavator economics distinct from road vehicles.
Jobsite power is the biggest constraint. A machine rated for a full shift may still need a midday charge, a high-capacity connection, a mobile battery, or a cable route that works around site traffic. Adoption is strongest where buyers can put a price on quiet operation and zero tailpipe emissions, as in urban projects, tunnels, and mines.
Key Insights
Mini excavators held the largest product share at 38% in 2025. J C Bamford Excavators Ltd. says its 19C-1E works for five hours in a standard application and produces 10 dB less operator-station noise than its diesel version.
Medium excavators are projected to grow fastest, at a 21.5% CAGR during 2026-2032, as development moves into the 15-25-ton classes. Volvo Construction Equipment AB specifies a 450 kWh battery and 7-8 hours of indicative runtime for its 23-ton EC230 Electric.
Battery electric systems held 74% of revenue in 2025, helped by untethered movement. Cable/tethered systems are forecast to grow fastest among propulsion types, at a 20.6% CAGR, in fixed work areas where continuous high power outweighs the limits of a cable.
The 50-200 kWh band held 46% of revenue in 2025. Packs above 200 kWh are projected to grow fastest, at a 23.4% CAGR. Guangxi LiuGong Machinery Co., Ltd. offers its 924FE with 423 kWh or 528 kWh lithium iron phosphate packs.
Construction generated 51% of revenue in 2025. Mining is forecast to grow fastest, at a 22.1% CAGR, because battery and tethered machines can cut diesel exhaust, heat, and ventilation demand in enclosed operations.
Asia-Pacific held 42% of global revenue in 2025 and is projected to grow at an 18.8% CAGR during 2026-2032. According to the International Energy Agency, average battery pack prices in China were 30% below North America and 35% below Europe in 2025, which supports larger packs.
China accounted for an estimated 52% of Asia-Pacific revenue in 2025. Its GB/T 45046-2024 standard for battery-electric hydraulic excavators took effect on June 1, 2025, giving the industry a common technical reference.
Europe represented 29% of revenue in 2025 and is expected to post the fastest regional CAGR, at 20.0% during 2026-2032. Supply is broadening too: an updated European database listed more than 170 emission-free equipment products across 22 categories in 2025.
The Netherlands is forecast to grow at a 23.5% CAGR, the fastest among the selected European countries. More than 120 subnational authorities and 159 partners had joined the Clean and Zero-Emission Construction covenant by September 2025, and the related support program has more than EUR 120 million allocated for 2026.
Battery and cable solutions now coexist within product ranges. Caterpillar Inc. lists a 387 kWh battery for its 320 Electric development machine and unlimited connected operation for its 395 Tethered Electric.
Concentration varies by weight class and geography. Caterpillar, Volvo, and Hitachi compete through multi-class development and energy systems. Wacker Neuson SE, Bobcat Company, Takeuchi Mfg. Co., Ltd., and Kubota Corporation concentrate on compact machines for rental, utilities, and indoor work.
SANY Heavy Industry Co. Ltd. is extending competition into large mining platforms. In July 2026 it delivered two SY3000E electric mining excavators to PT Jhonlin Baratama in Indonesia, the model's first overseas delivery. Across suppliers, buyers increasingly evaluate the machine and its energy setup together, so charging compatibility, warranties, and dealer competence can matter as much as digging performance.
