Dimethyl ether is nontoxic and noncorrosive, making it safe for consumers and the environment. Its high vapor pressure makes it an efficient and effective propellant that can disperse product formulations evenly and consistently. Also, DME is nonflammable in its aerosol form, reducing the risks associated with flammable propellants. The shift of the aerosol industry toward environmentally friendly and safer alternatives, coupled with the unique properties of DME, has led to a surge in demand for dimethyl ether as a propellant. Manufacturers are keen to replace traditional, potentially harmful propellants with DME to align with regulatory standards and consumer preferences for sustainable and safe products. As a result, the growth of the aerosol propellant manufacturing industry has generated significant demand for DME. Manufacturers are investing in DME production to meet the rising demand from the aerosol sector. This, in turn, has led to innovations in DME production techniques, transportation infrastructure, and application methods. Europe Dimethyl Ether Market Overview

Europe's sustainability goals and transition toward clean energy sources have prompted the manufacturers to produce DME from renewable feedstock. In 2021, SHV Energy and UGI International received approval from the European Commission to form a joint venture to produce and utilize renewable dimethyl ether. In 2022, Dimeta was established to increase the production and utilization of DME. The organization aimed to develop up to six production plants, with a DME capacity of up to ~300 thousand metric ton, by 2027. Several projects are located in Northwest Europe, with each anticipated to produce ~165 thousand metric ton of renewable and recycled carbon DME per year from mixed residual waste. The growing preference for sustainable and renewable feedstocks for the production of chemicals aligns with the environmental goals of Europe. Europe has explored the production of DME from biomass through gasification and synthesis processes. In 2020, European Commission funded project "FLExible Dimethyl ether production from biomass Gasification with sorption-enhancED processes (FLEDGED)" was completed. The project aimed to develop a low cost and efficient, flexible sorption enhanced gasification process for producing DME from biomass and its validation in industrial conditions. Further, the European Commission's efforts to decarbonize the transportation sector and encourage alternative fuel are driving the Europe dimethyl ether market.
