Acrolein is a colorless liquid with a sharp acrid smell. It belongs to the unsaturated aldehyde group. Acrolein is industrially prepared in two ways: oxidation of propylene and glycerol pyrolysis. It is primarily used as a contact biocide to control algae, weeds, bacteria, and mollusks. Acrolein is also used to make many valuable compounds such as the amino acid methionine, acrylic acid, polyester resins, polyurethanes, PG, alkoxypropionaldehyde, cyclic acetal derivates, or 1,3-propanediolAAc, and acrylonitrile. It is also used in papermaking to control slime.
