Sargramostim is a yeast-derived recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (rhu-GM-CSF) for treating pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP). Leukine stimulates the production of white blood cells, including neutrophils, monocytes/macrophages, and myeloid-derived dendritic cells, and promotes their ability to function.
In February 2018, Sanofi Genzyme sold the rights to manufacture and sell GM-CSF (product name: Leukine) to Boston-based venture company partner Therapeutics. After completing the PAGE study, Dr. Nakata, Dr. Tazawa, and others obtained marketing rights for GM-CSF in Japan from the company and searched for a company that would apply for pharmaceutical approval to the PMDA, but alveolar proteinosis was too rare. Every company was hesitant because it was unprofitable. However, things changed when the PAGE test was published in The New England Journal of Medicine. Nobelpharma started development and negotiated with Partner Therapeutics to obtain the right to import and sell in Japan, and decided to apply for pharmaceutical approval with the PMDA. After that, a contract was signed between the Advanced Medicine Development Center of Niigata University Medical and Dental Hospital, where Dr. Nakata belongs, and Nobelpharma, and the PAGE test data was transferred to the company.
