The global water and wastewater treatment technologies market had an estimated value of USD 5,342.73 million in 2017 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9.00% during the forecast period (2018 - 2023). The major factors driving the market are the rapidly diminishing freshwater resources and the increasing demand from the shale gas exploration activities.

Declining Freshwater Resources to Boost the Demand

Fresh water, even though abundantly available, is a limited resource to humanity in the environment. The increasing need for mechanization and food safety have led to the excessive use of the available freshwater resources in the past century, without taking efforts to replenish them. This has created an ecological imbalance, as the wastewater produced from agriculture, industrial processes, and sewage was discarded into freshwater resources. Currently, freshwater sources have become polluted largely due to human activity and some have even become toxic. Also, there have been reports of fires in the lakes, owing to chemical waste disposal.

Water treatment applications have been increasing lately, owing to the strong demand for freshwater resources. Water recycling is a multi-stage process in wastewater treatment plants. The primary treatment of water involves the removal of sediments and other high-density particles in the water that tend to settle down. The technique majorly employed for this process is sedimentation. Water is collected in huge tanks and is allowed to settle down for hours to days depending on the processing procedure. Then secondary treatment of the water is performed where the majority of the biological content of the water is removed. The tertiary stage involves the removal of other harmful dissolved chemicals and disinfection.

Secondary treatment in wastewater is a major part of the process, where a majority of the biological content has to be processed to reduce the load on the tertiary processing stage. Moving-bed-biofilm reactors are used at this stage. They have proven to be an effective solution with a minimal land requirement. Owing to the increased emphasis on environmental protection, concerned government authorities and environmental organization are enacting wastewater discharge standards for all the end-user industries. Therefore, to abide by these regulations, industries are adopting different wastewater treatment technologies, such as reverse osmosis, membrane bioreactors, and ultra-filtration, combined with water and wastewater treatment chemicals, for converting wastewater into reusable water.

Dissolved Solids Removal Technologies on the Rise

Dissolved solids removal technologies are expected to witness the fastest growth during the forecast period due to a growing demand for technologies such as reverse osmosis (RO), ion exchange, and multi-effect distillation. The RO membrane system has major applications in desalination systems, RO purification systems, and medical devices. Desalination systems are the largest and the fastest-growing application of the RO membrane market. Desalination system helps remove unwanted minerals and salt from the sea and brackish water. Desalination system produces fresh water that is suitable for human consumption. Recently, the Asia-Pacific region has overtaken the United States as the global leader in RO membrane market. India and China, with their rapid industrialization, will see their market share rise, outstripping other nations in adopting the technology. The falling costs of RO over the past two decades have made the market more competitive and have created growth opportunities in South Korea and Taiwan.

Furthermore, multi-stage flash evaporation (MSFE) is vastly used in Gulf countries, owing to the need of fresh water to support the need of the growing population, making wastewater treatment a priority. The vapor-compression distillation (VCD) technology in the United States and other countries in Europe is being surpassed by MSFE, due to its refinement.

Booming Demand for Water Treatment Technologies in China

The Chinese government is promoting economic growth and urbanization, which, in turn, will increase the demand for improvement in wastewater infrastructure and the usage of water treatment chemicals. Industrial waste discharge and agriculture are considered as two of the major polluting factors affecting China's water resources. The government has begun to concentrate more on the reorganization of the pollutant treatment measures, including water and industrial wastewater treatment. One of the major treatments they use is biological treatment, which comprises of aerobic treatment, anaerobic treatment, etc. Moreover, existing water and wastewater treatment facilities in the country have oxidization ditches, anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (ANANOX) process, etc. used in various industries. In addition, approximately 60% of the Chinese population relies on groundwater sources for drinking, and this is either untreated (in rural areas) or improperly treated (municipal water supplies). Considering this, the injection of industrial wastes and the improper use of chemicals in farming will result in the contamination of the groundwater consumed by the people. Thereby, increasing the need for adequate water and wastewater processing facilities in China. A few companies providing biological water treatment technologies are - Nalco water, Veolia water, etc. Hence, owing to the aforementioned factors, the Chinese market has a potential for growth in the forecast period with the demand for municipal water and wastewater treatment anticipated to increase at the fastest pace.
