Light trucks are small commercial vehicles used for short-distance freight transport, typically with a maximum gross vehicle mass between 3.5 and 7.5 tons. They feature compact dimensions, flexible transportation, and fuel economy. They are widely used in urban distribution, rural-urban logistics, freight transport for small and micro businesses, and transportation of light industrial building materials. Depending on their purpose, light trucks can be categorized as vans, flatbed trucks, dump trucks, and new energy light trucks.
The light truck industry chain consists of three main segments: upstream raw material and parts supply, midstream vehicle manufacturing and assembly, and downstream sales and application. According to CRI analysis, the upstream segment primarily provides basic materials such as automotive steel, aluminum alloy, plastic, and rubber, as well as key components such as engines, chassis, electronic control systems, batteries, and motors, forming the material foundation for vehicle production. The midstream segment, led by vehicle manufacturers, encompasses vehicle R&D, design, assembly, and testing. The downstream segment encompasses product sales, after-sales service, financial leasing, and end-use applications, with applications widely encompassing urban distribution, rural-urban logistics, e-commerce transportation, and construction material transportation.
Global demand for light trucks continues to grow, driven primarily by accelerating urbanization, the development of e-commerce logistics, and the expansion of short- and medium-haul freight. According to CRI analysis, in North America, Europe, and emerging Asian markets, light trucks are widely used in express delivery, retail logistics, agricultural transportation, and small-scale construction projects due to their operational flexibility, low costs, and adaptability. In the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in China, India, and Southeast Asian countries, the light truck market is rapidly expanding as urban logistics infrastructure improves.
The demand for light trucks in the Vietnamese market is continuing to rise, mainly driven by urban logistics, e-commerce distribution, rural freight and the development of small and micro enterprises. According to CRI analysis, with urbanization and rising consumption patterns, demand for urban-rural distribution is rapidly increasing, driving the use of light trucks in express delivery, retail, and the transportation of building materials and agricultural products. CRI predicts that with the rapid development of Vietnam's e-commerce industry, express logistics services and short-distance delivery are expected to see even greater growth potential.
According to CRI analysis, Vietnam's light truck market boasts a diverse lineup of brands, including the Ford Ranger, Mazda BT-50, Mitsubishi Triton, Nissan NP300 Navara, Chevrolet Colorado, Isuzu D-Max, and Toyota Hilux, as well as Chinese brands. Sales of electric light trucks in Vietnam are expected to continue to grow.
From January to May 2025, Vietnam's total truck sales reached 24,234 units, a 20% increase from 20,371 units in the same period of 2024. Among them, light truck sales reached 4,754 units, pickup trucks sold 9,298 units, and small trucks sold about 5,750 units.
According to CRI analysis, pickup trucks primarily serve the mixed cargo needs of individual businesses. Small trucks are primarily used for transporting agricultural and sideline products. Light trucks are primarily used for urban logistics and distribution. CRI predicts that with the rapid development of urban distribution, high-frequency freight, and e-commerce logistics in Vietnam, Vietnam's light truck industry is expected to continue to grow.
CRI recommends that global truck manufacturers, dealers, and investors promptly research the Vietnamese market and prepare for expansion into the Vietnamese light truck market. CRI's offices in Shanghai, China, and Hanoi, Vietnam, will assist foreign companies in entering the Vietnamese light truck market.
