The European lead-acid battery market for cars holds strong importance in the transport sector. These batteries remain the go-to choice for starting, lighting, and ignition (often called SLI) in vehicles with internal combustion engines, mild hybrids, and micro-hybrids that feature start-stop systems.

Demand stays steady thanks to the huge number of existing ICE and hybrid vehicles on the roads—new car registrations in 2025 showed hybrids taking around 34.5% of the market, while pure petrol and diesel together fell to about 35.5%, and battery-electric vehicles reached 17.4%. With the average car age hovering near nine years, the replacement market keeps things moving along nicely.

Tough EU rules on the environment and sustainability have pushed improvements in lead-acid designs, making recyclable versions like AGM and EFB more attractive for cutting emissions in micro-hybrid setups.

Even as full electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries gain ground in new sales, the lead-acid side is holding up well. This comes down to the ongoing dominance of conventional and hybrid powertrains (still well over 80% when including mild hybrids in many counts), the solid track record and low cost of lead-acid for basic starting needs, plus Europe's excellent recycling setup backed by battery regulations.

Looking ahead, expect steady, moderate expansion into the late 2020s and beyond, fueled by replacement demand, more hybrid models, even while the shift to full electrification continues. In short, lead-acid batteries for cars in Europe remain a reliable, key part of the mix as the industry moves toward greater electrification.
