The Iberian Blackout and Datacenter Providers' Response

This IDC Market Note highlights how datacenters in the Iberian Peninsula responded to a major electrical grid disruption. At around 10:30 UTC (11:30 a.m. in Portugal and 12:30 p.m. in Spain) on April 28, 2025, a massive electrical grid blackout impacted the Iberian Peninsula as well as some regions in Southern France and Morocco, lasting for about 10 hours in most areas. Being a part of what is critical infrastructure Portugal and Spain, datacenters were required to activate their disaster recovery plans to keep providing services. This IDC Market Note details the first signs of the blackout and its impact on datacenter providers in the region.
